According to tradition, Judith helped inspire the Maccabees to fight for control of the Hebrew temple in Jerusalem – the story that inspired the Hanukkah holiday. In many versions of the story she is actually related to the Maccabees. Around the world, families enjoy cheese and wine on the seventh night of Hanukkah in honor of Judith, and to remember all of the heroic women. Sephardic communities call it daughters’ night, and men host the evening, celebrating the women. I love this tradition! What do you do to incorporate courageous women into your holidays?
